WHY NOT LIFE

The Lord God gave him this command: you may eat from any tree in the garden. (Genesis 2:16 ERV)

If you have read the bible or heard the story, you know that there were two trees in the garden and that God specifically said you must not eat from the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil because this knowledge would bring death. The question that strikes me is, why not life. Why were they attracted to knowledge not attracted to the tree of life that possesses all knowledge?
The tree of life was right there all the time. What was wrong with its fruit? Why hadn’t they eaten from it yet? In seeking the Lord about this, many thoughts floated through my brain that would confirm that we are not at all different today!
They had life in the garden. Things were good. They walked with God. They were satisfied with the way things were. It never occurred to them that the other tree in the garden had anything better to offer. After all, it was just the tree of life. But that other tree, that knowledge tree; it just might have something special to offer. Even if God forbid that they eat it, it was worth taking a look at.
Are we any different today? Life in Christ is right there for the taking, but we do not really see any need for Him. We have all kinds of other things we need to do and see and try. We can do things on our own! On the way to that we think we can afford to give up morals, ethics, and every other standard so we can have the life we want. It often takes a long time to realize that nothing is truly satisfying us as we go.
The worst thing that happens is that we can become too prideful and stubborn to recognize that the tree of life has what we needed all along. We wrestle with the truth and I believe that there are many times that we think about life, but thinking about it simply is not enough. We need to eat the fruit. We need Jesus!
I have heard every manner of excuse, or at least a lot of them; I made many excuses myself before I chose life. Let me just say this, it is never too late as long as we are breathing. As long as there is life in our bodies, there is hope in the Lord.
Will it work? Of course it will. Can I still have life? Of course you can. What if I fail? He who begins a work in you will see it to completion. What if I mess up? If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us. It can’t be that simple you say. Why not? God wants us to succeed.
So, why do we hesitate to choose life? Jesus came so we could have life. He came so we could have the life God intended all along. There are still two trees. No matter how long we have spent eating from the wrong tree, we still have access to the tree of life. There are no guards keeping us from it. The Holy Spirit is busy trying to lead us to Him.
Remember that tree is not intended to be a onetime bite. We need to continually partake. Let this New Year be a year that produces greater life in you and through you. Why not life?
