WITNESSES

"Do not tremble; do not be afraid. Have I not proclaimed from ages past what my purposes are for you? You are my witnesses--is there any other God? No! There is no other Rock--not one!" (Isaiah 44:8 NLT)

A witness is someone who is called upon to tell the truth. A witness is someone who has seen something in person or has knowledge that can prove or disprove something. In Isaiah chapter 44, God made some promises to Israel and then He told them not to worry or be afraid because His purpose for them was that they would be His witnesses that He is the One True God. God assured them that when He makes a promise He keeps it.

God has that same purpose and plan for our lives. When most Christians hear the word witness, the picture that comes to mind is standing on the streets passing out tracts or cornering people telling them the steps to salvation. The idea of witnessing makes many people a bit queasy. It strikes fear in their hearts and they wonder how they could do such a thing. It is in fact, something that many Christians do their best to avoid. But God never intended that it be something to fear.

God intended that witnessing would be a result of who we are and what we experience, not something that we would have to “do.” In other words, you are a witness! Now the question is; “What does our witness say?” What do we want it to say? Well of course, we want our witness to be true. The truth is that we can only witness to what we have experienced or have personal knowledge of.

When we are sure of something, then it shows. When we have experienced something we want people to know. We want to bring glory to God. God says that we need not be afraid. Since it is His purpose that we be witnesses, He is going to provide us all the proof we need. He says in His word that He watches over His word to perform it. So it stands to reason that when we declare our faith in God to do what He says He will do; He will in turn provide the proof.

God is not talking about us being witnesses to nonsense. He is talking about us being witnesses to the very things he has promised. Therefore, we need to be grounded in His promises and sure if His faithfulness. When we are, then we do not need to be fearful of declaring what God has said and what we believe He will do.

This also should give us high expectations and hope for each day. We can anxiously anticipate God doing great things in and around our lives. We can encourage others to expect to see God confirm His word. Remember, God said we are witnesses. This comes from the river of life that He pours into us. God does not expect us to witness to what we do not know. There are things coming that we have not yet experienced, but we know them by faith, and there are things happening all around us that we have experienced and know are a result of God’s promises. Just let His light shine!
