YOU ALONE LORD
Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.(Ps. 16:5)
It seems in this Psalm, that David had arrived at a great place in His relationship with God. A place of faith that we all must press toward. “Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge.” Even when we are safe, we need to ask God to keep it that way. Just as when we are healthy we want to stay that way. When we are well provided for, it is the same case. When things are good, we should feel comfortable going to God and saying thank you Lord, let’s keep it this way.
David also saw God as His master. He saw Him as the type of master who provided him with every good thing. Too often, people forget that God is this type of master and act as though He is a task master. Many have the idea that God is a taker, but from the beginning He has been a giver. David had a lot of good things, and he declared to God that he realized that they were all from Him.
We must be careful when we are blessed in our lives that we remember where the blessings come from. Remember King Nebuchadnezzar? He forgot that it was God who provided him with a great kingdom even after Daniel warned him. He received a reality check as he spent time as a beast of the field. Without God, that is about all we are. No matter how people look from the outside, without God destruction is all that is ahead.
David also realized that true heroes were Godly people. He was not fooled by peoples position in society, but rather he honored their position with God.. He knew that those who chased after other Gods, would find only sorrow.
Have you discovered as David did, that God alone is your inheritance. He is your source of blessing. Do you understand that God will guard all that is yours. He will keep you and all that He has given you. And while He is at it, he will add to it. He desires to supply you until you have more than enough to share.
David declares in verse 6 that God has given him a pleasant land, a wonderful inheritance. The place we may be in at a given time may not seem pleasant, but in truth, God has given us a pleasant land. He promised Israel a pleasant land, one that was flowing with milk and honey. God knew there were giants in the land, but He also knew they were no problem. He was more than ready to drive them out. Many times, God drove the enemy out for Israel. He made the land what He promised. A pleasant land. How many times, did they go and live in houses they had not built and harvest crops they had not planted?
As you read the rest of this Psalm, you will see that David is blessing the Lord who he knew would guide him. He knew the Lord was always with him and that he need not be shaken. “No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts praises.” Oh yes, David was a on a good roll here. May we all roll with him.
