YOU DO OR YOU DON'T
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.) (Romans 8:9 NLT)
Are you a Christian? The Bible is written for everyone. It is a guide for Christians, and it is a guide to becoming a Christian. Many people who go to church find out as they read the Bible that they are not Christians at all! I know this is true, because that was how I found out that I was not a Christian. After years of Sunday school, a long line of attendance pins, singing solos, and etc., I discovered that I was not a Christian at all. I was not controlled by the Spirit. I did not even lean in His direction!
Either we do have the Spirit of God living in us or we do not. If you think it is none of my business, you may not have the Spirit of God living in you. If you say, “Yes, thank God I am.” That is good news. If you wonder how you can be sure, the first step is simply to ask Jesus to forgive your sins and be Lord of you life. After you have done this, you need to grow up in Him and follow Him.
If the Spirit of God lives in you, you have a desire to be like Jesus. This is because the Holy Spirit comes to lead us into all truth, and the Jesus is the truth. If we have no desire for God or the things of God what kind of Christian can we be. Before I came to know the Lord I was more like an illegal alien when I was in a Church. I hoped to get the benefit of heaven without being part of the family. No one will sneak into the kingdom of God. Many may slide in at the last moment like the thief on the cross, but we all get in the same way and that is through Jesus Christ.
I know this sounds really elementary, but it is too important to neglect. From time to time we all need to take a check on our walk with God. Have we lost our first love? Have we ever experienced that first love? Do we care what God says? Are we uncompromising or totally compromised?
If we have the spirit of God in us, then we are no longer controlled by our sinful nature. We may sin, but we cannot be comfortable in it. The Holy Spirit is tugging and pulling us along. If this is not what we are experiencing, then we have either quenched the Spirit or the Spirit is not at home in us at all. If that is the case, then we are in fact not Christians. If we are not Christians then we are in danger of eternity in hell. I know this is not a “feel good” thought, but all the same, it is true.
Without the Spirit in us, it is impossible to please God. No amount of good deeds does anything to impress God unless they are Spirit-led. Everything boils down to whether the Spirit is in us or not. No church, doctrine, or anything else, can place the Spirit in us. Only God can do this and only through Jesus Christ will He do it. Now that is simple and yet it is the most important thing anyone can ever learn.
