ZEALOUS FOR GOOD THINGS
But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always... (Galatians 4:18a)
How many of us are always zealous for the good things? How often are we zealous for not so good things? Before we will ever allow the Holy Spirit to guide us according to the good plans of God, we need to acknowledge the truth that we often put a lot of energy into things that we shouldn’t. In other words, we have to be honest with ourselves!
Paul was writing to the Christians in Galatia and letting them know that he knew that they acted differently when he was away than they did when he was present. Do we ever do that? Do we act one way when we are around Christians and another way when we are not? Are we more zealous for God when we are church than we are at other times. Wouldn’t you agree that being zealous for God is a good thing? Paul says we should be zealous for good things at all times.
Of course we will act differently on the street than we do in church, but being zealous is not just our outward display. We can be and should be just as intense in our commitment to God outside of fellowship as we are inside. We should be just as aware of His presence and open to His guidance from our rising up to our lying down and everywhere in between. “Oh my, that is not possible”, you say! In our own strength, that is very true, but with God all things are possible.
Remember, one of Paul’s main points to the Galatians was they there were being deceived because they had ceased to be led of the Spirit. They were doing so well, but fell back into depending on the law and the flesh.
The Holy Spirit knows what is good! He knows what is best! He lives to lead us into all truth. That is why we can never be truly comfortable if find ourselves moving zealously in a wrong direction. We need to enlist the Holy Spirit to direct our zeal. He knows good and how to go for it!
A thought came out in a conversation today that, “planning for natural results, blocks the supernatural things that God can and will do”. For instance, if we plan on sickness running its normal course; it probably will! If are trusting the Lord to see us through it; He will! There is nothing really wrong with that, except that Jesus took stripes for our healing. So what if we were zealous for healing and planned accordingly. Would it be so bad if the sickness ran away instead of running its course?
How about if we plan to spend the rest of our lives making payments, while we trust the Lord for enough to make them? There is nothing really wrong with that. But what if instead we were zealous to be debt free and the Holy Spirit led us in zealous pursuit of that victory. We can be zealous in love, forgiveness, giving, and receiving, along with a very long list of other things. This is a seed that can produce a great harvest. Water it!
